Saltburn by the Sea:
Old Saltburn is the original settlement, located in the Saltburn Gill. Records are scarce on its origins, but it was a centre for smugglers, and publican John Andrew is referred to as 'king of smugglers'. In 1856, the hamlet consisted of the Ship Inn and a row of houses.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, built in 1884, is connected with the promenade, pier and beach by a fascinating water powered funicular tramway. With the help of water and gravity, the brakeman ensures a smooth journey up and down the steep cliff, saving you 173 steps up and down! Imagine walking through history as you save 173 steps from your daily routine! Despite the unfamiliarity of Victorian engineering, the courteous operators are happy to explain it and make this an experience rather than just an excursion. You can enjoy panoramic views of Saltburn Beach as you ride on the tramway.

There is only one pleasure pier left on all of the North East and Yorkshire coasts, and it is the Saltburn Cliff Tramway that links Saltburn to it.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea was a popular beach resort when the railroad came to town in the 1860s. There was one problem, however, Saltburn Pier was built to accommodate and attract visitors, but it had to be accessed by treacherous cliffs. For visitor safety, the UK's oldest operational water-balance lift was built to safely descend visitors down the cliffs. A replacement carriage body was made without stained glass windows in 1955. Artist Chloe Buck brought back the stained glass windows to the carriages in 1991.
Major renovations took place again on the Cliff Lift in the 2010s. There is still a lift running for most of the year, but it is only operational during the high season from March to October. It retains its popularity as a tourist attraction because of its distinctive stained glass windows and Victorian style.
